The United States of America (USA) warns the Malawi government to refrain from deepening bilateral ties with Russia. The warning is issued by the ambassador of the United States of America to Malawi , David Young, a month after, Malawi’s Minister of Internal Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, led a high-level delegation to the 11th International Security Meeting, which took place in Moscow. On the sidelines of the meeting, The Russian government has committed to providing Malawi with 20 million dollars to install nuclear energy as a reliable source of electricity that could help the country transform into a middle-income nation. Recognizing the abundance of minerals that Malawi has , the Moscow government through  Secretary of State and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor N. Zubov emphasized that a switch from hydropower to nuclear power would allow Malawi to generate sufficient electricity, which can be exported to neighboring countries .Due to the fact that Malawi does not have a Russian diplomatic representation, Zubov urged the government of Lilongwe to work closely with Zimbabwe, a country that has a Russian embassy. According to the Russian Secretary of State, a deepening of cooperation between Malawi and Zimbabwe, could lead to mutually advantageous results, particularly in areas such as trade, investment and technical knowledge related to nuclear energy. By establishing a nuclear power plant, Malawi would join South Africa and Egypt, and would be the third largest African country to use nuclear energy. In view of the agreements reached, Ambassador David Young warns that the United States of America will not allow mutual cooperation between Malawi and Russia to take place. Young said that, instead of looking to Russia, Malawi should consolidate current ties with the USA and China. It is known that Moscow is currently under international sanctions after invading Ukraine. (RM Blantyre).Source:Rádio Moçambique Online
