The National Social Security Institute (INSS) pays 2,542 thousand beneficiaries, of which around 45,800 are Self-Employed Workers (TCP) and around 169 thousand are taxpayers. Subordinated to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MITSS), the INSS also provides assistance to around 121 thousand pensioners from different sectors, namely those who receive old-age, disability and survivors’ pensions. An MTSS press release sent to AIM states that the system is on its way to maturity and financial strength to fully respond to its mission, which is to manage mandatory social security regimes and recognize rights and fulfill respective obligations. . The statement comes on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the creation of the Social Security System in Mozambique, which was marked last Monday (18). The note quotes the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Margarida Talapa, praising the maturity of the Social Security System, a fact that represents an opportunity to think about social security in the present and in the future. After 34 years of its existence, according to the governor, the system presents notable progress in “several areas”, including the coverage of more workers, especially TCP (Self-Employed Workers). Notable facts also include the expansion of territorial coverage to more districts of the country and the modernization and computerization of services, a fact that allowed speedy responses to requests submitted by users. Managed by the INSS, the Mandatory Social Security System aims to guarantee the subsistence of workers in situations of absence or reduced ability to work, in cases of illness, maternity, disability and old age, as well as the subsistence of surviving family members, in the event of death of said workers or pensioners.
