The debate on Filipe Jacinto Nyusi’s succession to the Presidency of the Republic continues to be “taboo”. Yesterday, the Frelimo Political Commission met for its first session of the year, but was again silent about the likely replacements for its leader at the Ponta Vermelha Palace. In a press release, released yesterday afternoon, the ruling party reveals that its Political Commission, the most important body in the interval between Central Committee sessions, limited itself to saluting Filipe Nyusi for his “performance and dedication in promoting of peace” and in the “search for solutions to increasingly improve the lives of Mozambicans”. He also congratulated his leader “for the inaugurations, on the 14th of February, of the tourist resort located at Ponta Mbembene and the Training, Research and Inspection Center of the Maputo National Park” and created the Central Office for the Preparation of General Elections, to be led by its Secretary General, Roque Silva Samuel. However, he said nothing about the succession of his leader. Remember that Mozambique holds, on the 9th of October this year, the VII Presidential and Legislative Elections, and, in light of the Constitution of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi is prohibited from re-candidating for the position of President of the Republic, due to having fulfilled two consecutive terms in charge of the country’s destinies. However, with eight months to go before the balloting takes place, the ruling party has not yet released its list of pre-candidates for Head of State, whose election should take place at the next session of the Frelimo Central Committee to take place, in principle, next March. José Pacheco, Basílio Monteiro, Alberto Vaquina, Luísa Diogo, Celso Correia, Aires Bonifácio Ali and Amélia Muendane are some of the names advanced behind the scenes as having the ambition to dislodge Filipe Jacinto Nyusi from the throne, however, none of them have yet come forward to confirm such a pretension. Please note that, according to the current electoral calendar, approved by the National Elections Commission, candidacies for the Presidency of the Republic must be submitted by the 10th of June. However, it is known that this deadline will have to be revised, as soon as Parliament approves, between February and March, the project to revise the electoral package.
