The U.S. Embassy Maputo is recruiting a Disability Inclusive Education and Democracy, Rights, and Governance Specialist Intern, to be based in Maputo, Mozambique.
Description
- The Disability Inclusive Education and Democracy, Rights, and Governance Specialist Intern will
support the USAID Education, Democracy, and Governance Team in advancing disability
inclusive development policies and practices across various aspects of USAID’s education,
democracy, rights and governance programming - OPEN TO: All qualified Mozambican students who meet the education requirements below
- WORK HOURS: Part-time; 20 hours/week
- SALARY: Paid Internship
- LENGTH OF HIRE: (6 months)
Duties
- Provide the Education, Democracy, and Governance team with an informed, critical, and
nuanced perspective on issues related to supporting equitable access to education,
democracy and governance programming for persons with disabilities, including
identification of progress within USAID’s programming and gaps/opportunities to
strengthen USAID support. To the extent possible, the intern should be able to advise on
equity issues pertaining to people with disabilities from marginalized communities (i.e.
girls/women with disabilities, etc.) - Identify, gather and provide basic analysis of significant events, processes and other
issues concerning equitable access to the democracy, human rights and governance
field within USAID’s programming scope - Conduct research on disability inclusive education laws, policies, and practices; outline
recommendations for USAID programming to better support learners with disabilities in
accessing, meaningfully participating in and achieving equitable education outcomes
across all levels of education (pre-primary through post-secondary) - Contribute to new USAID activity designs related to disability inclusive education and
advocacy and legal reform for the rights of people with disabilities in Mozambique
ensuring alignment with USAID policies and strategies including but not limited to the - Education Policy, Inclusive Development guidance, and the recently published
Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance Policy - Track and share relevant news trending in the media pertaining to the rights of persons
with disabilities in Mozambique, especially related to education, democracy and
governance issues. - Liaise with relevant local entities, associations, and/or organizations, including local
organizations of persons with disabilities - Collect, analyze, summarize, and present quantitative and qualitative data as directed
- Participate in weekly and ad hoc team meetings
- Schedule, organize, and/or attend relevant internal and external events
Requisites
- Currently enrolled in university or completion of a university degree
- Language: Level 3 (Good Working Knowledge) Speaking, Reading, Writing of Portuguese is
required. Level 4 (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English is required. (This will be tested). - EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of and experience working and/or volunteering with local Mozambican
organizations focused on supporting marginalized populations including people with
disabilities, women and girls, refugees and internally displaced peoples, and/or LGBTQI+ - Previous advocacy and/or teaching experience is a desirable
- Research or practical experience organizing events, training, education programs for
persons with disabilities is preferred - SKILLS REQUIRED (including language):
- Strong research, analytical, and communication skills
- Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is
helpful
